"Everything — every tree, every blade of grass, all the animals, insects, human beings, buildings, the animate and the inanimate — is always changing, moment to moment. We don’t have to be mystics or physicists to know this. Yet at the level of personal experience, we resist this basic fact. It means that life isn’t always going to go our way. It means there’s loss as well as gain. And we don’t like that."
Pema Chodren, "The Places That Scare You"
Over a week ago marked the fall equinox, Friday was the new moon and even though the weather hasn't been the most autumnal, one season has ended and another has begun. I'm reminded that everything is always changing and moving, and that it can be a struggle at times to let change happen with an open hand. The cause of much of our unhappiness and suffering is attachment to things (even seasons and weather, and also hopes, dreams, expectations...) and as a result, we prevent natural change and organic movement from happening. When we practice mindfulness, though, we become aware of when we are attached and can then practice gently releasing, allowing things to flow again. When we let go, we can live and love and experience life more fully. So, for these first days of fall (and beyond), l invite you to practice letting go with me.
"We begin with the understanding that we can’t experience profound well-being without working with, not against, the gritty reality of life."
Pema Chodron, "Living Beautifully"
One practice that continually teaches me about this very thing and working with the "gritty reality of life" is my yoga practice. It's hard to flow from pose to pose if I don't release the one I'm in, and it's impossible to take a fresh, new oxygen-filled breath if don't let go of the one I'm currently holding.
Honoring these very ideas of shifting and changing, I'm excited to offer some special classes & workshops over the next month.
