Paying Attention/ Spring Happenings

Dear Friends Near & Far,

"The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness."
—Jon Kabat-Zinn

Happy May (even though we're already halfway through)!

Last Saturday, my kids, knowing how much I adore lilacs, set out with my mom's help and some pruning shears to collect some of these May beauties growing abundantly along the country roads upstate in the Catskills. Meanwhile, my husband, my dad and I were on our own mission to collect ramps and take advantage of finding some before their short season passed. Last year while on a Mother's Day hike up the mountain behind our house, we discovered several big swaths of land covered with this tender, delicious spring onion and marked it on our calendar to remember for the next year. The hike was successful, and we've been enjoying ramps all week. Upon returning from the hike, we were presented with the most gorgeous purple lilacs spilling out of all the vases and ball jars that could be found. We were all excited by the surprise, and the kids and I joyfully spread the fragrant flowers throughout the house to enjoy, all the while knowing that they wouldn't last long. By the time we left to drive back to the city just a day and a half later, they already had begun to droop and lose their vibrance.

This is a time of year that's chock full of these glorious little fleeting gems. Whether it's a flower, a seasonal vegetable or a moment, we have but one opportunity to notice it, to enjoy it, to truly experience it. I knew the lilacs wouldn't last forever, but I still loved seeing their brilliant color throughout the house and breathing in their aroma while it lasted. And I know the ramps won't be there on the next hike I take up the hill in a few weeks, but I love that I can enjoy them now and look forward to their appearance again next year.

Even with these lovely moments and beautiful things to notice, it can also be a time of year that's packed full of activities for people- end of the school year activities, work and social functions, sporting events, and so much more. It can be challenging to take the time to pay attention, and yet it's so important.  Jack Kornfield, the meditation teacher and author, writes, "When we get too caught up in the busyness of the world, we lose connection with one another-and ourselves."

This is where our yoga practice and other mindfulness practices make such an impact. Each time that we are on our mat paying attention to our breath, we are inviting that attention we cultivate to spill into our lives. So, maybe, when we sit down to a meal, we notice the colors of our food and taste the food's many flavors; and when we head out for our daily run, we observe the way one foot feels as it strikes the ground before the other; and when our child is excitedly telling a story, even if it is rambling on and there are a million things to do, we listen without distraction; and when we're on the road but stuck in traffic, we might take the time to notice the gorgeous flowering apple trees in the field next to us; and on and on. These are opportunities to connect to each other, the world around us and ourselves, and research shows that when we do that, we're happier and more grounded.

Thich Nhat Hanh says, " Mindfulness frees us from forgetfulness and dispersion and makes it possible to live fully each minute of life. Mindfulness enables us to live."

Living well,  paying attention to our sense of wellness and being mindful about our health are all key during these often over-full spring days. With that in mind, I'm excited to share with you what's going on at Julie Peacock Wellness in these next weeks; special classes, events and a wellness special that I hope will help to support you on your path to being & staying well.
